Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
The Story The Trade Federation gets tired of being taxed, so they blockade the planet of Naboo. The Senate send in two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) to help out. But the Trade Federation doesn't feel like negotiating anymore. They are urged to go ahead and attack the planey by Darth Sidious (who later will become the emporer). The Jedi take the Queen of Naboo (Natalie Portman) to the Senate so she can plead her case. But the ship gets damaged trying to get past the blockade. They only survive because of the fast repair job of R2-D2. The decide to stop on Tatooine to buy parts and make repairs. Qui-Gon learns that his money is no good there, so he puts up the queens ship as collateral on a pod race. The racer he bets on is driven by Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who we all know will later become Darth Vader. Here we are introduced to C-3PO, who Anakin is still in the process of building. Part of the bet is also Anakin's freedom. Of course he wins. They get the parts they need, and Anakin goes with the Jedi to meet before the Jedi Council and hopes to be able to apprentice to become a Jedi. But as they are leaving, they come across Darth Maul, Darth Sidious's apprentice. A quick skirmish, and the group is on their way to Coruscant. Anakin comes before the Jedi Council, but he still fears for his mom, who is still a slave. So the Jedi Council say that he is not to be trained in the Force, since he still has much fear in him. Meanwhile, the Queen puts forward her petition to the senate. But they just want to do a bunch of talking and not really do anything about it. So Senator Palpatine (later to become the Emporer) convinces her start the motions that will put him in power over the Senate. The Jedi et. al. go back to Naboo to fight for it's freedom. Lots of good stuff here, and basically they win. Happiness and Joy spread throughout the land, and the now Chancellor Palpatine stops by to say congratulations.
Darth Maul promised to be a very good character. He was allright, I guess, but I'm still pretty disappointed. He had maybe three lines in the whole movie. And ended up getting whacked. Very menacing, but not quite as much character as I was hoping for. Of course they had to get rid of him so Darth Sidious could take on a new apprentice. Namely, Anakin Skywalker. Darth Maul
Qui-Gon Jinn Qui-Gon is what everyone expects in a Jedi Master. Fighter, thinker, planner. He'll even go against the Jedi Council if he's sure he's right. I think they did a good job portraying this character. Too bad he got whacked. Of course if he hadn't, he would have trained Anakin, and we wouldn't have Obi-Wan's major screw up to look forward to.
